Paint or Paste?

Hola, senoritas!

Happy Friday! I want to thank all of you for always leaving such thoughtful and kind comments. These days, I'm not nearly as considerate as all of you. It may take me a while to visit your blog, but I promise I'm usually up-to-date with all of you and just behind on my commenting. Ugh, and I still haven't updated from my blogroll from forever ago. I'm just so lame these days! I promise to catch up...eventually...

Please forgive me, especially when I ramble about how much I suck and then turn right around and ask another favor. I know, I know. I shouldn't....but I need your opinion!

You may recall our guest bathroom and the unfinished walls we uncovered when we stripped it of its unappealing wallpaper...

Lee and I are completely committed to applying beadboard to the walls. Of that we are certain. But as far as the other part of the wall, we just keep flip flopping.

On the one hand, smoothing out the walls and painting them a subtle gray green might be a better investment for resale. I'd love to use the paint color we've selected for our kitchen walls - Sherwin Williams Sea Salt.

On the other hand, I've completely fallen in love with a wallpaper pattern by Thibaut. The blue and white pattern brings back happy childhood memories as my Mom had all sorts of blue and white from lamps to her china spread throughout the house growing up. It would be dramatic, glamorous and I also think very fresh paired with the crisp white beadboard. And, let me also say that I promise (scout's honor!) that we would prime the walls first to avoid any deflating wallpaper removal scenarios for the next owner.

So let's hear it. What would you choose for our icky bathroom wall dilemma?

  3. Ooh, that's a toughie. I would probably go for paint because it's easier but that wall paper sure is pretty. Good luck with your decision!

  4. How about painted wallpaper, as a compromise? Something like this: http://www.cuttingedgestencils.com/damask-stencil-3.html?category_id=1009 with a bold blue color on white would give a really lush and dramatic feel (and no wallpaper cleanup!)

  5. I think the bead board with the wallpaper would be an awesome combo! Do the bead board in white and wall paper above! To me, the wallpaper is a pretty classic design. Plus blue and white are very neutral colors.

AND I have the perfect towels to go in this bathroom! http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=S993101&catId=SHOPSALE-DECORATIVE&pushId=SHOPSALE-DECORATIVE&popId=SHOPSALE&navAction=top&navCount=174&color=041&isProduct=true&fromCategoryPage=true&templateType=E

  6. i'm always worried about wallpaper in bathrooms-- wouldn't the humidity make it peel after a while?

  7. Honestly? I think if you love the paper, you should go for it. It's not that hard to remove if a future buyer doesn't like it, and in the meantime, it's YOUR house. There's no way to guarantee that a future buyer would like the paint you choose, either, and if I've learned anything from HGTV it's that some people make house buying decisions based on existing paint colors. (which, hello, is crazypants behavior.) I think it'll look gorgeous and more importantly, will make you happy every time you look at it. Doooo iiiiiit!

  8. My first instinct would be to go with the paint, but that's because I've just never been a big wallpaper fan! Although there are some pretty cool wallpapers out there these days... I'm kind of intrigued by the embossed ones. That Thibaut pattern is really pretty though, and would add a lot of charm.

  9. Thanks so much, ladies! The walls underneath the original wallpaper turned out to not be real walls. They're not finished at all and we'd actually have to put up dry wall to paint...which could be a hellacious project. At the moment, we're thinking of putting up the beadboard fairly high and only adding a small amount of wallpaper. It'll be a pain to put up, but probably not as traumatic as putting up dry wall.

Well, I say that, but I don't really know. Has anyone put up drywall in their homes? Any feedback on how laborious that task is?
