Now We're Cooking - Introducing Our New Appliances!

Our appliances are older than Moses. And being the cheapos that we are, Lee and I made the executive decision last year to ride them out as long as humanly possible. The week before last, our dishwasher committed suicide.

We got the message loud and clear: replace the others before your stove sets the house on fire!

I present to you the 1987 ones (ALMOST as crickety and hazardous as Keith Richards):

(Sorry I don't have a better picture...)

And now for the new appliances!

Since all of the originals were from the 80's and threatening to die, we decided to replace them all. We got a great deal at ApplianceSmart and Lee installed all 3 without a hitch...well, except for that one gas leak when he was replacing the stove, but we were all good after we ran outside and aired out the house for a few moments.

He also attacked the cabinets with a hacksaw and circular saw to make the stove fit (still have to do one more round) and built a floor since we didn't replace the current stove with another drop-in. Not bad for his first appliance install!

My apologies for these ridiculous photos. We're still debating over whether to paint the cabinets or not and I took off the cabinet doors months ago in an effort to convince Lee we should go for it.

Lee's concern: the paint may make the cabinets look amateurish and take away from resale value. We're planning to move in a year or two, so it's not like we're investing in a house where we'll be for a long time.

My conern: our cabinets are hideous and all of the dark wood makes the kitchen look like a 1987 cave.

Your opinion: I want it!

I also sewed a roman shade a long time ago that has been put away while we make our painting decision, We're booked solid on our weekends until the end of May, but I'd love to share with you a more comprehensive view of our kitchens once the cabinets are put together (one way or the other) and the roman shade is up.

Whew, talk about a rambling post! Thanks for stopping by!

  1. SO much better. And hell yes on painting the cabinets. Ours are going on 7+ years and they still look great. The key is to CLEAN them & do a ton of prep work including sanding thoroughly, priming, and painting them carefully. It's amazing what a difference it would make. I absolutely love the look of different upper/lower colors too.

  2. I am in love with your appliances - especially your fridge. Mind sharing which one that is?

And about the cabinets, definitely paint them. 100% absolutely no doubt about it. They'd look great next to your new appliances with a fresh coat of paint.

  3. LOVE you're beautiful new appliances! :) Good choices!

I'd say go for painting those cupboards! They'll look great and I think people would appreciate some nicely painted cabinets as opposed to the dark wood!

  4. Completely jealous over your new stainless steal family!

As far as the kitchen cabinets go, have you thought about replacing just the doors? My mother-in-law replaced her kitchen cabinet doors to save on money (they also sanded and re-stained the bare bones) and I swear the kitchen looks completely brand new! Then again it all depends on the wood quality you have.

But I honestly don't think painting the cabinets is a bad idea. Lee just needs to view a few more before and after pics to seal the deal.

    Good luck!

  5. thumbs up for painting from me!

re: Lee's concerns on amateur-ness, I'm pretty sure that in their current state any potential buyer will see 'em as a future project to budget for.

Any improvements y'all choose to make should seem (a) more livable than current and (b) at least hint at what could be.

What I mean in (b) is that if your whole house is airy and free-flowing except this kitchen, painting the cabs may help a prospective homeowner feel like an airy home is within their grasp. As opposed to the huge!expensive! task that getting your current kitchen to airy-ness may seem.

Also, I think the disconnect in styles between cabs and appliances makes your kitchen seem smaller and more outdated than it really is.

  6. The appliances look amazing!!! I think paint will vastly improve the current state of the kitchen & help the resale value!! Otherwise left alone potential buyers might think of the kitchen is a pricey project....

  7. You ladies are amazing! Thanks so much! Any paint suggestions?

Kate - the fridge is by Frigidaire and it is fabulous and quiet! We love it! I found it listed online: http://www.appliancesconnection.com/i150738-frigidaire-fghn2844lf.html?ref=pricegrabbermain

  8. Oohlala! Nice appliances!

And paint those cabinets! If you go for latex paint, you can buy an additive to increase the drying time which will reduce the brush marks (I don't remember what it's called, but they have it at Ace Hardware).

  9. The new appliances look great! It seems like everyone is on board for painting. I look forward to the after if you can change Lee's mind.

  10. OMG, this is what you must do in that kithen....paint the cabinets, then paint the cabinets, then paint the cabinets! Please paint those cabinets! You guys will do a great job, you just need to have patience and proper tools/setup. Don't skip the cleaning, don't skip the sanding, use primer, sand after priming, and your cabs will look great. I highly recommend the ACE Cabinet and Trim paint with a brush, not a roller...especially if you are using the ultra pure white - it takes a beating and looks fab forever. You cannot leave those cabinets as-is, it will definitely hinder a sale! I love those appliances, they deserve nice clean painted cabs! ha

  11. YAY for stainless steel! That's what we chose in our kitchen too.

Yes, those cabinets are quite hideous (no offense, but you said it yourself :) Painting those cabinets would be a lot of work, but I'm sure it would be worth it. I'd take Sara's advice too; she's quite the pro by now! haha
